Common application questions

What density felt do I need for vibration damping?

For low-frequency, high-displacement vibration (5–60 Hz machine bases, compressor pads, fan-housing isolators) use Hard pressed felt at 0.31–0.44 g/cm³ (SAE F-7 to F-13). For higher-frequency noise/vibration the optimum is Medium Hard 0.24–0.30 (F-15 to F-26). Many critical assemblies use a felt + rubber sandwich to cover both bands.

Which felt is best for polishing gold and silver?

Hard wool felt wheels at 0.45–0.75 g/cm³ (SAE F-1 to F-3, 100% wool). The dense fibre network holds rouge and tripoli polishing compound and releases it gradually under pressure — producing the mirror finish required for high-karat gold, silver, platinum and other soft precious metals. Choose square-edge wheels for flat work, taper-head or knife-edge bobs for tight features.

Can wool felt be used for filtration?

Yes, but for most filtration applications we recommend needle-punch felt rather than pressed wool. Polyester or polypropylene needle-punch at 200–800 GSM gives controlled porosity for HVAC air filtration, industrial dust collection, oil-mist coalescing and liquid filtration. For high-temperature applications (>180 °C) we offer aramid or PPS blends.

What's a geotextile and where is it used?

Geotextile is a permeable needle-punch fabric used in civil engineering: highway sub-base separation, drainage trench wrap, erosion control on embankments, retaining-wall reinforcement and landfill liner protection. Premier Felt's geotextiles are polypropylene or polyester needle-punch, 150–800 GSM, available in widths up to 6 m and rolls up to 200 m for fast civil-site deployment.
